Science, Technology and Society

The Science, Technology, and Society field focuses on academically exploring social issues related to science and technology and applying the findings to society. We combine knowledge from the history of science and technology, philosophy of science and technology, bioethics, and policy research to examine the interaction between science, technology, and society and address the challenges of contemporary society. Graduate students in this field are engaged in researching a variety of topics, including neuroethics, renewable energy and civic engagement, surrogacy and women’s rights, biopower regarding genome editing, the technological and social history of amateur radio, and product testing as citizen science practic, etc. The educational goal is to cultivate researchers who are most able to reexamine how science and technology should be in contemprary society from a societal perspective by grappling with various research issues related to science, technology, and society and conceive of new models of future society.
