Human geography is a discipline that explores the various cultural and social phenomena that develop spatially worldwide and regionally, in relation to the natural and social environment. We share such interests and conduct academic explorations focusing on various regions and subjects of research.
Diverse cultures and societies exist in the modern world, and they have various political and economic systems, customs, and norms closely linked to them. Even within Japan, beyond the widely recognized East–West cultural differences, diverse customs and values are found across different regions. How did this regional cultural diversity develop? Geographical inquiry begins with such simple questions. Therefore, having skills such as a “geographical perspective and way of thinking” accumulated in the history of geography is crucial for delving into such questions. We advance our inquiry armed with this “geographical perspective and way of thinking.” In particular, we emphasize fieldwork as a concrete means to this end.
We welcome all who wish to learn about the geographical perspective and way of thinking to uncover the mysteries of the world.
