Admission Policy of the Graduate School of Humanities (Master’s Degree Program)

Desired Applicants

In accordance with the admission policy of Osaka University and the human resources development policy set forth in the Educational Objectives, the Graduate School of Humanities admits individuals who are highly motivated to acquire traditional and cutting-edge insights on the humanities, advanced specialized knowledge and outstanding academic expertise in language and culture, and broad-based knowledge, design prowess, and an international mindset to identify and address issues independently.

Basic Policies for Student Selection

In order to appropriately select students who meet the criteria for desired applicants, the Graduate School of Humanities adopts a diverse range of selection methods for each recruitment unit of its five divisions (each department in the case of the Division of Japanese Studies). The Graduate School of Humanities also welcomes applications from students with a major in social sciences and natural sciences, as well as international students and working members of society.

In accordance with the admission policy of Osaka University and in consideration of the specific features of the Graduate School of Humanities, each division (each department in the case of the Division of Japanese Studies) examines the abilities and aptitude related to learning and research in the selection process.

■Admission Policy of Division of Arts Studies (Master’s Degree Program)

In accordance with the admission policy of Osaka University and the Graduate School of Humanities and the human resources development policy set forth in the Educational Objectives, the Degree Program in Arts Studies has established the following admission policy and admits individuals accordingly.

Desired Applicants

The Degree Program in Arts Studies seeks to admit individuals who are deeply interested and willing to actively and independently learn in the fields of arts studies and aim to conduct original and advanced research, and who intend to leverage what they have learned in various areas of society.

Basic Policies for Student Selection

In accordance with the admission policy of Osaka University and the Graduate School of Humanities, the Degree Program in Arts Studies selects applicants on the basis of examination of their ability and aptitude regarding learning and research in the four departments comprising the arts studies field, namely the Department of Aesthetics and Science of Literary Arts, Department of Musicology and Theatre Studies, Department of Art History, and Department of Arts and Media.

Examinations are held as follows, through which individuals motivated to engage in arts studies research are admitted.
In the General Entrance Examination for the Master’s degree program, selection is conducted by a written examination in which applicants are tested on the specialized knowledge, foreign language proficiency, thinking skills, and writing skills required for conducting research in each of the departments, and an oral examination in which applicants’ research skills, motivation, aptitude, and other aspects are evaluated.
The Entrance Examination for Working Members of Society is conducted for working members of society, in which applicants are selected for the program above on the basis of evaluation of their specialized knowledge, research skills, and aptitude, taking into consideration their experience as a working member of society as well as academic achievements.
The Entrance Examination for International Students is conducted for international students, in which applicants are selected on the basis of evaluation of the Japanese proficiency, specialized knowledge, research skills, and aptitude required for studying and conducting research in the program.

The Degree Program in Arts Studies seeks to admit individuals who are deeply interested and willing to actively and independently learn in the fields of arts studies and aim to conduct original and advanced research, and who intend to leverage what they have learned in various areas of society.

Basic Policies for Student Selection

In accordance with the admission policy of Osaka University and the Graduate School of Humanities, the Degree Program in Arts Studies selects applicants on the basis of examination of their ability and aptitude regarding learning and research in the four departments comprising the arts studies field, namely the Department of Aesthetics and Science of Literary Arts, Department of Musicology and Theatre Studies, Department of Art History, and Department of Arts and Media.

In the General Entrance Examination for the Doctoral-degree program, selection is conducted by a written examination in which applicants are tested on the specialized knowledge, foreign language proficiency, thinking skills, and writing skills required for aspiring to earn a doctor’s degree (Ph.D.), and an oral examination in which applicants’ research skills, motivation, aptitude, research achievements, and other aspects are evaluated.
The Entrance Examination for Working Members of Society is conducted for working members of society, in which applicants are selected for the program above on the basis of evaluation of their specialized knowledge, research skills, and aptitude, taking into consideration their experience as a working member of society as well as academic achievements.
The Entrance Examination for International Students is conducted for international students, in which applicants are selected on the basis of evaluation of the Japanese proficiency, specialized knowledge, research skills, and aptitude required for studying and conducting research in the program.
